Police brutality impacts the United States as well because we also have racism, prejudice, and prisons. Our court system is different from others. Even within our country states have their own way of punishment. Most think that people in jail should rot in there and have the key thrown away. Prisons should be a place of rehabilitation. The United States prison system is set up for people to go back to jail. Once you’re in the system it’s hard to get out. 52% chance of returning to prison within 3 years. (Crime in America). In Attica Correctional Facility, New York, 1971, inmates protested better life conditions and political rights. 29 inmates were killed. It just doesn’t make sense to die just because you don’t want to live like an animal and want your rights. Over 2,000 detainees protested. Till this day justice hasn’t been served for it and prisoners still get abused by guards. In Administrative Maximum Penitentiary Florence, Colorado, an inmate with no background of mental illness began to act suicidal. He cut off one of his fingers and testicles and slashes his ears. He been to other prisons but he would get beaten and he was sent to Colorado for protection, but it made him crazy. In Tent City Jail, Phoenix, inmates are punished by being put in tents outside that reach up to 145 degrees. (MotherJones, 2013) Activists in these cities make rallies and strikes outside of prisons or downtown. Some activists were actually victims of police brutality. Activists try and sue the jail but almost always lose the case. In order to actually get an officer to get served justice is to have actual footage of the attack. Inmates are also activists because they go on hunger strikes and then are force fed. (HuffingtonPost, 2013)
